Bland, beige branding doesn’t work…

I know you see it all over the ‘gram and Pinterest and it’s so cool and chic, and hits the “clean girl aesthetic” (wtf even is that?), but bland, beige brands just don’t work.

Picture this – your client is deep in the doom scroll of finding someone to work with. Beige brand, after beige brand scroll, scroll, scroll, nothing stands out, nothing captures their attention, and nothing feels genuine. And when you run a brand that deals personally and directly with your clients, you NEED to be perceived as genuine.

Pre-made colour palettes will give your clients the ick…

This also ties in with my point above. Because all the beige brand girlies are using the same colour palette (or more like beige palette) and it just isn’t hitting the mark. Scrolling Pinterest in search of the perfect colour palette might seem like a quick and easy fix, but I guarantee they’re going to be overused and clearly lacking originality. Believe it or not, your choice of brand colours should be curated based on a special little thing called ✨colour psychology✨ (yes you’re welcome to call me a psychologist – I’ll accept it), and reflect your brand’s personality, values, and evoke specific emotions in your audience. In short, Pinterest scrolling ain’t it, capeesh?

I have a personal vendetta against Canva and I ain’t afraid to show it…

Fonts play a CRUCIAL role in your brand identity. Using popular, free fonts might seem cost-effective or easy, or worse, it’s “fun” to play with fonts every time you create a new Instagram post in Canva, but please, for the love of branding… Just. Stop. If this ⬆️ is you and you’ve ever wondered why your brand doesn’t look as polished or professional as your competitors, or you’re not attracting the right clients, I need you to take a long, hard look at yourself and repeat after me… “I’m allowed to have fun with exploring different styles in my personal life, but I will never have fun and experiment with the look and feel of my brand”.

Your brand doesn’t exist to be experimented with.

It needs to be consistent.

It needs to build trust and credibility with your audience.

If it looks and feels different every time your audience comes in contact with it?

I think you can figure that answer out on your own.

To be successful, you need to be:

You didn’t quit your 9-5 to hustle 24/7 and make less than enough for it

Most designers will tell you that branding (or rebranding) your own business is a near-impossible nightmare. I used to be right there with them.

But now, I disagree – designers please don’t come for me 😬

I rebranded my entire business in just one week (brand identity and website included – yes, the whole shebang) with the exact strategy and process I use for my client’s brands every single day.

You gotta practice what you preach, amiright?

Now, let me explain:

It’s a little thing I like to call ✨ brand strategy and tried-and-tested processes ✨

1. Brand Strategy is key: Without a solid strategy, you’re just guessing. Seriously. A well-defined brand strategy aligns your business goals with your brand identity, ensuring every design choice reflects your core values and speaks directly to your ideal client.

2. Stay true to the original brief, always: Don’t get me wrong, there were times when I was tempted by different ideas and design elements, but ultimately all I had to do was stay true to the original brief. This is crucial. It’s so damn easy to get distracted by shiny new ideas, but consistency and intention is key to a cohesive brand.

3. Consider you and your brand as separate entities: As a person, I’m all about variety – I love exploring different styles and interests. Some days I’m wearing bright florals and other days I’m running the all black ‘fit, I’m fluid in my choices – and that’s fine. But as a brand, it’s a whole other kettle of fish. It’s putting aside your personal preferences and focusing on how you want to be perceived, your communication style, your process, and of course, meeting (and exceeding) the expectations of your clients. And since my brand IS a personal brand, it’s obvious crucial to stay true to elements of myself and my personality, but the brand needs to be built intentionally and not just because you love the colour pink.

4. Tried-and-tested processes: Over the years, I’ve developed a process that, shock horror, actually WORKS. It’s efficient, effective, and ensures nothing is overlooked. From initial concept to final design, every step is planned and executed with precision – it’s intense, but it’s worth it. All it takes is one week to achieve your dream brand or website.

5. Follow the I for Design Studio formula – My 3 C’s method: You are at the epicentre of every brand and website decision we make. The goal is to gain Clients, Clarity, and Confidence. Why? Because with the 3 C’s comes increased revenue, strategic decision-making, and trust-based relationships – everyone’s goal in biz, right?

And to have an increase in revenue, you need clients and brand clarity. To make strategic decisions in business, you need brand clarity and confidence. To build trust-based relationships, you need confidence and clients.

And you might think I’m crazy, but trust me when I say it actually works.

The last few weeks I started feeling really stagnant, lacking inspiration and clarity. I wanted to implement new strategies into my business but I just didn’t feel the desire to work in my business because it just didn’t feel good.

What am I talking about? Well, the buzzword of the entrepreneurial world, of course: getting clear on your ✨ ideal client ✨

And this all might seem really overwhelming but don’t overlook the goldmine of information you already have at your fingertips. Tap into existing data from your website analytics, your social media insights, or if there has been someone you have worked with recently who was just chefs kiss in every possible way, turn them into your ideal client avatar.

These nuggets do wonders in unveiling trends and patterns you might not have noticed otherwise.

The extra bonus is, these nuggets will also unveil if you’re attracting un-ideal clients and give you a kick up the butt to make changes so that the right people have their eyeballs on your business.

And just so you know I DO practice what I preach.

Our businesses are constantly shifting and evolving and last year I revisited my ideal client to ensure my content and offerings are aligned with who I want to work with.

I had one specific client in mind who when I thought about them and their project I said, “I want this kind of person to work with me ALL THE TIME” – not to mention all of my clients are amazing and I’m obsessed with all of them – but this one client, their project, our vision and values were so perfectly aligned I was constantly thinking about their project as if I was a teenager thinking about my first crush.

So, I looked back and created an ideal client avatar based on this real life client. Besides the things mentioned above, I also considered where they hang out online, i.e. if they’re Insta-obsessed, I’m not going to focus my time on engaging with people on Linkedin. I thought back to the specific problems they mentioned in our calls and what exactly it was that I was helping them with, the unique solutions and transformation I was providing that they were obsessing over.

…

And the rest is history.

Now, this is a bit of a condensed version of the process involved in identifying your ideal client but if you’ve never done it before, this is going to get you well and truly on the right path of never having to dread opening your emails to see an email from that client ever again.

Trust me when I say the clarity you gain in ALL aspects of your business after getting clear on your ideal client opens you up for huge success (and less headaches!).

Guilty as charged, I’ve often found myself immersed in my work to the point of neglecting my personal boundaries – no, I’m not proud of it. However, each little stumble has helped serve as a valuable lesson, reinforcing the importance of prioritising projects that evoke a resounding “F*ck yes!” while STILL maintaining a healthy equilibrium. I was skeptical that these projects and these people exist, but they do. I’ve finally found my people and when I’m say I’m so lit up from it, I mean it!

I don’t know about you, but I’m SO over seeing the SAME. BEIGE. BRANDS everywhere I turn 🤢

You know the ones I'm talking about... ⬇️

Seriously, though... Type 'Modern Beige Branding' into Pinterest and try to tell me that the search results aren't what you see every time you open Instagram or go searching for a brand to work with. You won't be able to.

And if you feel attacked right now, I'm genuinely sorry. I'm also sorry if you've invested in branding and this is what your designer has produced for you because it ain't it, sista.

And don't get me wrong, beige brands definitely have their place in the world. If this style of design is genuinely what aligns with your core identity then it shouldn't be a problem, until now. Every Tom, Dick and Harry has jumped on this beige brand trend and now you can't tell one brand apart from the next. And it's not only a big no, it's jeopardising your brand. Why?

Everyone I have spoken to about this dreaded trend has agreed with me on this:

As soon as I see a hint of this trend coming through from a brand, whether it be on socials or their website, I RUN in the other direction (🏃‍♀️ ⬅️ That is me physically running away from my computer). With all jokes aside, it actually gives me the ick when I see it. Where is your originality? Where is your unique selling point? If you look like every other brand in your industry, I'm sorry to say it, I'm not even giving you a chance to sell to me. I'm closing out of that browser immediately.

Now, if you've made it this far and feel slightly (or entirely) attacked, don't hate me please. I say this with love and genuinely with your best interests at heart.

❌ You're not going to achieve incredible results with a brand that blends in.

❌ You're not going to attract your ideal clients with a brand that follows trends.

❌ You're not going to confidently pitch your services to the world if you have a brand that's been built based off of another, i.e. "Well, what are they doing? Should I be doing that instead? I'll just wait to see what [x] does and follow suit"

Nooo, no, no. Please, just NO.

A few things:

A. Your designer shouldn't have delivered you a beige brand (this is a HUGE disservice in my eyes and I'm sorry if this feels triggering)

B. You shouldn't have DIY'd your branding in Canva based off a beige trend (I know it's tempting and it looks cute, but you're never going to stand out following this trajectory)

By now, you either hate me and you're smashing that 'Unsubscribe' button because I've struck a chord (again, sorry) OR you might be with me and have a burning desire to ditch this monochromatic vibes trend and enter your ✨thriving era ✨ with bold, bright, and coastal-inspired branding that screams YOU. I know which one I would want.

If you're ready to make a statement and stand out in an industry that is quite literally saturated with beige brands, then believe me when I say that following the latest trends is NOT going to help get you there.

How to Keep your Website Language on Point

Speak THEIR language, i.e. the language of your ideal client

As a website developer, I know my audience isn't going to be fluent in tech talk. That's exactly why they come to me – so I can help with all of the technical terms, processes and setups. Hence why I simplify my language and ditch the jargon wherever possible.

For instance, I might transform complex phrases like, “Our platform offers robust, scalable, and cloud-native solutions for seamless integration with APIs, allowing for agile development and micro services architecture” (🤢) into, “Our platform provides flexible tools that easily connect with other software, so you can build and adapt your projects quickly and efficiently”.

See the difference?

Keeping it simple ensures your ideal client not only stays engaged but also tells them, “Hey, I'm here to simplify and help clarify things so you're not overwhelmed and feel involved and comfortable in the process”.

When reviewing your content, ask yourself, "Would this make sense to someone who's never been exposed to my industry before?" No? Time to simplify, my friend.

Ease up on the exclamations!!!

I learned this the hard way (and maybe you did too)!!!! While enthusiasm is fantastic, drowning your content in exclamation marks can send the wrong message. It can seem sporadic or unprofessional, or just make you seem like a crazy lady. Keep it professional and sprinkle exclamation marks sparingly for that extra punch! 😉

Avoid clichés like the plague

Steer clearrrr of overused phrases like "industry-leading," "cutting-edge," or "revolutionary." Instead, showcase your achievements with concrete examples and evidence. Let your work do the talking without relying on worn-out clichés. Because let me tell you, every damn brand I come across on the internet is, “the first of its kind” or “the best in the world”. Where is the proof? Show, don't tell…

Crafting an online presence that resonates with your ideal client is an art form in itself, don't get me wrong. But these simple tweaks can make a world of difference to your online presence.

Why don't you try ditching the ChatGPT tech-talk, and start writing and creating with authenticity. It is guaranteed to build a more meaningful connection with your audience which means: more leads, more sales and less time worrying about if you can pay this weeks' bills.

Before commencing what I like to call the ✨ design phase ✨ of ANY branding project, we work together to develop the creative direction of your brand. In other words, through questionnaires and conversations I develop a brand inspiration moodboard based on the information you have provided.

When we are in discussions, I encourage you to let loose and allow me to get inside your head and really understand your big, audacious dreams, 'cause gal, that's when the magic happens!

Essentially, your brand moodboard is a way to communicate the perceived direction for your brand identity. We take the time to really nail this step as it sets the vibe for the ENTIRE brand and serves as a guide and reference point throughout the design phase of the project.

Your brand moodboard is just ONE of the many steps involved in working together to bring your custom-crafted brand identity to fruition and trust me when I say it is imperative in setting us up for success!

As a DIY logo designing biz owner, you may often wonder why your brand doesn't feel aligned with your goals, why it doesn't light you up inside when a client enquires with you (or why you aren't getting enquiries, fullstop) and why you feel a sense of embarrassment when it comes to brand exposure for your biz. I personally experienced this recently. I came back to work after taking about 3 weeks off over Christmas and New Years (a fabbb break) and started thinking about my plans for the year ahead and, of course, working with new clients and how I was going to attract said clients. I’m going to be a bit raw and real here and say that January is typically a reasonably slow month in my business, and more broadly, the creative industry as a whole (typically) and I knew that if I wanted to be working with my dream clients throughout 2023 that I needed to up-level MY OWN online presence.

Redesigning my personal website had been on my to-do list for far too long. Of course when you’re busy with client work, updating your own website is going to take the backseat - not because I want it to, but because client work is the priority (obviously).

When I took a first look at my website at the start of this year I legitimately cringed and felt a near embarrassment and feeling of shame. I knew that my website wasn’t an accurate representation of not only the work that I know I CAN produce for my clients but it didn’t showcase the beautiful work that I HAVE produced for my clients.

I don’t mean to tickle my own fancy here, but, I think the work that I produce is pretty top notch and I wanted to communicate that to my audience. Communicate that the end result is an indescribable feeling of joy when we launch the final product but also that my processes and my strategy is there and that my services and expertise is something that they can truly rely on and trust in!

I have definitely made the most of these couple of slow weeks in the studio and have completely redesigned my own website (yay!) and it is safe to say that:

1. I’m IN LOVE (even if I do say so myself)

2. I am now feeling so CONFIDENT and EXCITED to showcase my website and portfolio to the world

3. I no longer feel embarrassed when linking my ‘www’ to potential clients

Although I knew for a long time that my website was overdue for a refresh, sitting back at my computer at the start of this year and being overwhelmed with those feelings of embarrassment and shame made it more clear than ever that it was time for me to make changes in my business!

Let me take you through the 23 steps it takes to establish your brand and build and publish your very own Squarespace website using the new Fluid Engine Editor, starting from the VERY start!

01. Brainstorm and decide on your business name

• If you are wanting to build a personal brand then you could consider using your own name 

• If you have plans or dreams of expanding your business in the future you could consider a  name that isn’t too personal or indicative of you being the only person behind-the-scenes 

02. Check the availability of your chosen business name

• Here is a great website for checking the availability of Australian business names

03. Register your business name and apply for an ABN (if you don’t already have one)

• Here is a great website for registering your business name and ABN

04. Purchase your domain name from GoDaddy.com/en-au

• If available, purchase both the ‘.com’ and ‘.com.au’ domain extensions and set up a redirect for whichever extension you don’t connect to your website. ‘.com’ domains have a high level of awareness internationally, so it can be useful for Australian businesses to register the .com extension on top of ‘.com.au’ if you are wanting to service clients overseas. It is also a way of preventing competitors or rogue parties from purchasing and using the domain/s associated with your business.

05. Invest in professional branding for your business

• If you are a graphic or brand designer and have the skills, yay! If not, I cannot recommend enough that you invest in hiring a professional designer for your branding. Not only will it help you to stand out in your industry, it will also help to build trust and seriously make a world of difference when it comes to the success of your new venture!

06. Invest in professional photography

• See how I have said ‘invest’ twice now? It might seem like a huge outlay or commitment for someone just starting out in business but trust me when I say this is going to uplevel your brand immediately! People buy with their eyes! Using quality imagery throughout your website will not only catch your reader’s interest but also improves your visibility online. Think about it… If you stumble across a website and see someone’s home job, DIY, photography does it make you stop for a second and think, “Do I actually trust this person with (whatever it may be)”? It is so important to build that trust and connection with your audience as soon as they land on your site, so make sure you have beautiful photography ready to go, no matter the industry you are in!

07. Decide on the pages you need for your website

• You don’t want to be making things up as you go. 

  If you are completely unsure, I recommend starting with: 

  1. Home 

  2. About

  3. Services 

  4. Contact 

  You can watch my free masterclass on my ‘Foolproof blueprint for a high converting website’ which helps you to map out your website blueprint in a way that makes sense. I take you through identifying your starting point, end objectives for when people land on your website and mapping out ideal pathways to get them to where you want them to be, e.g. how to lead your audience from your starting point (home page) to your ideal site objectives (getting in contact with you or downloading your services guide).

08. Create your Squarespace account

• If you are just wanting to get your toes wet to begin with, Squarespace offers a 14 day free trial so you can create your account and start to get familiar with the platform before you commit to a subscription

09. Select your desired website template or start from scratch

• This is completely up to you! I recommend starting with a Squarespace template if you are not familiar with the platform and/or comfortable designing your own website sections

10. Upload your brand logo

• If you invested in professional branding your designer should have provided you with an array of logo layouts, colour combinations and file formats (don’t freak out if you have no idea what the heck you’re meant to do with each of them!!!). Whichever logo variation you choose to use on your website, I recommend ensuring your file has a transparent background (PNG file). This will allow you to experiment with different header colours as you build your site without having to go back and edit/re-upload your logo.

11. Choose your desired desktop and mobile header layout settings

• In your Squarespace editor screen when you hover over your Squarespace header navigation and click ‘edit site header’ a panel will appear which will allow you to edit your site header and navigation settings. In the top right of this panel you will see icons: Globe (which stands for global header and navigation settings), Desktop (which stands for desktop header and navigation settings) and Mobile (which stands for mobile header and navigation settings), these different tabs allow you to set your header layout, turn navigation links on and off, set your navigation padding and so much more! Play around here until you are happy with the layout of your site on both desktop and mobile views. 

12. Add your brand colours

• If you invested in professional branding your designer should have provided you with a style guide outlining your brand colours or at minimum a list of your brand colour codes. In your Squarespace backend navigate to Design > Site Styles > Colours > Edit Palette. This is where you enter your brand colours which then edits your site colour settings and ‘themes’ globally. I recommend adding the colours from lightest to darkest respectively from left to right in the palette editor as this will influence how your section themes appear. After adding your brand colours you can then click back into ‘Colours’ and edit each ‘Theme’. These are labelled ‘Lightest 1’, ‘Lightest 2’ etc. and when clicked into you can customise things further (if you are comfortable doing so). This isn’t at all compulsory as Squarespace customises things automatically quite well!

13. Choose your desired fonts or upload your custom brand fonts

• Squarespace has quite a large library of fonts to choose from and if you aren’t comfortable with adding a little bit of custom code to your website, you are best off choosing fonts from their selection that best matches your brand fonts. If your brand heading font is a sans serif font, scroll through what they have on offer and choose the font most similar to what is used in your branding. 

  Alternatively you can upload custom fonts to your website using a little bit of code. This is slightly more advanced and something I cover in depth and take you through step-by-step in my Squarespace Web Design for Beginners course.

14. Format your font, button, spacing and site settings to your liking

• Go to Design > Site Styles and format things as you like

15. Create and name your website pages and organise how you would like them to appear in your site header (up the top of your website)

• You can move them to be under ‘Main Navigation’ (which will make them visible in your site header) or you can move them to be under ‘Not Linked’ (which will hide them from your site header but still be available to view)
